The difference between the oil used in marine engines and car engines

1.What is the difference between marine diesel engine oil and vehicle oil?
First, marine motor oils generally have a relatively high alkali value. Due to the high sulfur content of marine fuel oil, which generally varies from 0.5% to 3.5%, it is required that the lubricating oil must have sufficient alkali retention to neutralize the acidic substances generated after the fuel is burned.

Second, marine oil has good water resistance. Ships sailing on water will inevitably encounter water pollution, so marine lubricating oil must have good anti-emulsification and moisture properties. The motor oil does not have this performance, and there is no such requirement.

Third, the speed of marine diesel engines is generally lower than that of land-use diesel engines, the use time is long, and the required viscosity and grade are different.

Fourth, marine diesel engine oil has all the other properties of vehicle diesel engine oil, while vehicle diesel engine oil does not have the special performance requirements of marine diesel engine oil.

2. Can the motor oil be used instead of the special oil for marine diesel engines? Why?
No. Because marine engine oil will inevitably encounter water pollution in use, the mixing of water will cause the degradation of additives in the engine oil, the total base value will decrease, the performance of oil products will be reduced, and the machine will be worn and mechanical failures such as bearings will result. The requirements are extremely strict. Once the diesel engine lubrication system encounters water pollution, the special oil for marine diesel engines can not only resist the erosion of water (stable in contact with water), but also quickly separate the water, which is not available in vehicle oil. That is to say, it is very wrong to replace the special oil for marine diesel engine with vehicle diesel engine oil.
